What's the weather like down your end of town? My son is doing a school camp IN TENTS down your way. It poured most of the night up our end and I was worried about him. It's his first time ever in a tent or perhaps floating out of a tent.

I'm sure he'll be saying "I told you so" when he packed his card game and I told him he wouldn't need it.

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

It was very rainy ... everyone was running around Uni with umbrellas ...but still had on thongs and short shorts, so go figure. :P

My brother goes on camp next week ... it's his first time in a tent (though only one night) too ... and he has to cook tea for himself ... we'll see what he actually ends up eating ...

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

They cancelled my son's camp at about 5pm the second night. They were going to do Challenge Hill the next day but the permapine is deadly when wet.

I'll tell you what your brother is going to eat: tomato soup. That's what my son "cooked". In fact he had nothing but tomato based products the whole time. I didn't know that when the school rang me to pick him up early. I didn't have any dinner for him so I picked up Lasagne from Fasta Pasta on the way....

He had a plastic bag full of wet clothes - three sets after only two days. He only had one more set left for the last day. BTW they slept three to a tiny tent in very cramped conditions. When my son got into his bed that night he was marvelling over the space. .

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

LOL, my brother has to cook stir fry or pasta or something else on their list - they got told and mum has to go out and buy the ingredients for him to take. My brother, at thirteen, has a recipe repertoire of toast, fried bread and chocolate brownies from a box ... I'm quite keen to see what he ends up with ... Mum's packing him LOTS of snacks just in case, which says a lot about her confidence in him. :P

And camping, honestly, is my idea of hell. Never been and never plan to. Parents are not fond of camping so never took us - which is fine by me because the idea of sleeping with snakes and bugs and spiders and, god forbid, mozzies gets a very big  from me ...

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

Yeah, I'm not into camping either :P I like nature and I'm happy to go outside and look around...but I don't want to sleep or do my business out there.

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

Camping is uncomfortable and usually crowded and never the right temperature.

I love looking at nature...on my TV. ;D

I don't like camping myself, but I do enjoy hiking, and I don't mind the outdoor cooking, although I definitely prefer to have even a smelly outhouse available.

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

I used to camp when I was at uni but we always went to camping grounds with a facilities block. My husband won't even entertain the idea. He spent a lot of his childhood caravaning and hated every moment.

I'm wondering if you could track down combat ration packs (CRP) for your brother - the same ones they use for the army. I know it sounds stupid but they are balanced meals in a foil contained that becomes it's own cooking bag. You add water and stir for about 20 minutes. My son loves them. I know where I get them but you might not have the clearances to get into the area...hmm camping shops whould have them and I'm sure they are available online. I know they are sold on the outside somewhere.

In the US they are called MREs (Meals Read-to Eat, theough the troops actually call them Meals Rejected by Ethiopians).

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

That's exactly what I suggested, Oz, ration packs. But no, the kids have to cook exactly what is on the menu. :P But mum has been to the shops and bought a bunch of stuff like dehydrated peas and whatnot to add to his pasta. It'll be ... interesting ...

I did lots of holidaying in caravan parks when I was younger, but only ever in cabins ... the closest I'll ever get to "proper" camping. Not a fan of hiking either. We did lots of hiking on school camps and I was not a fan ... we went to the Flinders Rangers in year 9 and had to do this really long hike in the heat ... I got so exhausted and out of breath that the teachers made my best friend carry my backpack and a small group of us (also hiking rejects like myself) + a teacher hobbled slowly along behind everyone else with plenty of rest stops ... I think that destroyed any notion of liking hiking I had. :P

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

I got a nose bleed on a school hike up mount kosciuszko (Kosciusko).

Just an addendum to my son's camp.

They divided the year into two groups. Mon-Wed group came home Tuesday night and didn't do the Wednesday Challenge Hill. Wed-Fri group stayed the whole three days and did Challenge Hill. We met someone from the second group when we were shopping yesterday (Sunday). The conversation went:

My son: "What did you do to your arm?"
Other student: "I broke it on Challenge Hill at camp."

Apparently they thought the permapine was dry enough for the second group. They were wrong.

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

Whoops. :P At least they know for next time. It's meant to be nice and sunny all week so no chance of wet permapine for little brother.

And it might be a mum thing, but my mum is insisting my brother take a pile of food (stuff that won't go bad in the heat, so snacky type things) in case he gets hungry ... his backpack (which is actually mine and better come back in pristine condition) is totally filled with all this food. Brother thinks it's overkill but mum is insistent ... she's put a lot of thought into food that will keep okay (not as though this is her first bush-type camp ... other brother went on many ... me, thankfully, none).

Yep, that sounds like a mum thing.

Well, I told mum if little bro didn't bring back a pristine backpack then he could have it and she could buy me another. :P He comes back tomorrow so we'll see ...

And I can't be the only one to have had trouble getting on yesterday. :P

So, did you get a new backpack?

I liked camping when I was younger.

Emy, did you ever see an Aussie show from a few years ago called H2O: Just Add Water? It's about some girls who turn into mermaids when they come in contact with water. It just got added to my Netflix streaming so I was wondering if it was any good. If you haven't, that's fine. The episodes are short so I could always just was the first episode and see if I like it.

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

Haha, lol. The backpack came back fine ... I'm using it right now as a school bag, which is why I've not been on very much lately ... I'm doing a four week teaching placement in a remote town in the Northern Territory with a high Indigenous population so that is taking up most of my time. It's quite different from your suburbs, that's for sure.

And I loved H20 when it was on, though I only watched the first and second season I think because after that some of the characters changed or something, or I got too busy and wasn't home in time to watch it (I think it was on at like four in the afternoon). But it was very enjoyable and I really liked it ... Australia does some good kid programs (if you ever get the chance Blue Water High is excellent, as is Dance Academy, Dead Gorgeous and two older ones, Parallex and Snobs).

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

Thanks! At the moment, Netflix only has the first season, so I'll see how that goes.

There are some good Aussie shows. I really liked the first season of Sea Patrol, but I stopped watching in the second season. I'll keep an eye out for those others (if they show up on Netflix).

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

Sea Patrol is one of my all time favourites. :smitten: But it's just finished this year with its final ever season, season 5. I was devastated when it was announced it was the last season. :( You should definitely keep watching, if you have the chance, because it gets better ... season two wasn't the best series ever, probably one of the weakest. There are some absolutely fantastic episodes in the later seasons, including two different eps where they kill off main characters (some of their best work). The recent series finale was a good example for some fantastic acting.

Rush, which is a current cop show, is also very good, for something adult. Rescue is also good - a show about rescue paramedics, and a few old long running series - Blue Heelers (rivals NCIS as my favourite ever show) is a cop show set in the country, All Saints is a medical show, Stingers is about undercover cops and Water Rats is the Sydney water police. Just, you know, if you ever need anything else to watch. :P

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

Thanks for the recommendations. It took a fair bit of effort to get the Sea Patrol episodes (I happened across the show when the pilot was first shown) and I liked it enough to watch all of season 1. I watched the first couple episodes of season 2, got annoyed and stopped watching. It's good to know it got better. Maybe I'll look out for the other seasons.

Post subject:  Re: Random Chat

It looks like they've added seasons 2 and 3 of H2O on Netflix so I'll get to see the first three seasons at least. I've watched the first episode and it's cute. I'm interested enough to keep watching at least.
