When I was living in Indy there was one February we had unusually cold temps for about a week, with the coldest finally dropping to -25. We had some wind, too, so the wind chill was a factor as well. I remember feeling like I could never get warm, and was continually hunched over as if it would help -- I just couldn't get myself to straighten up!

The day after that lowest temp, it went up to 18, and you would have thought it was 75 -- everyone was back on the streets downtown, men were walking from office to office in just their sport coats, others had their coats open and didn't bother with gloves or hats. I think we got over that soon enough, but the nearly 50 degree jump was so dramatic! Once again -- it's all relative!

Israeli friends of mine moved from Belarus to Israel when it was -40 in Belarus and +20-something in Israel  Which would be... *goes to check* -40 to somewhere in the 70s. Okay, that sounds even more absurd in fahrenheit than in centigrade. Yikes!

That is actually the least of my worries. Mormons or drug dealers...that's so not a contest!

I'd hope so, but some people really hate us. For example, there was a big ice storm over in Boise and so an LDS ward over there was cancelled today and it was in the local news. A person got on to insult Mormons in the comments when all the story was doing was informing people in the Treasure Valley ward that there was no church today.

I've read a lot of nasty comments directed toward religious people, not just LDS, but Christians in general, Muslims, even just anyone who is religious at all. It's like, "Really, people? Ever hear of freedom of religion? You know, one of those basic rights we espouse living here in the USA? Remember? You don't like it, don't practice it, leave other people alone."

Yeah, that really gets my back up. Last thing we need is another freakin' Holocaust.

Well, the reason Utah is known as the home of the Mormons is because Missouri issued an extermination order in which any person could kill a Mormon on sight and then, when the Mormons fled to Illinois and built the city of Nauvoo, the state of Illinois forced the Mormons to leave in the middle of the winter and didn't even let them sell their property, first. So religious freedom is the ideal, of course, but it's generally been applied only when people like the religion in question. Joseph Smith wrote a letter to Martin van Buren, asking him for help with protecting the early Saints, and the response was "Your cause is just but I can do nothing for you."

...and then, people wondered why it was that Mormons were so happy when Joseph Smith decided to run for president. :)

Every Sunday morning, I do what we call indexing in my church. Basically, I look at old records and enter the data into the LDS Family Search database so that people can do research on their ancestors. (By the way, this is not just for Mormons, either. If you're doing family history/geneaology, you should really check it out. There are a LOT of records to search and it's free to access.) This morning, I've been doing birth records from Kansas 1900. Boy, reading the cursive is hard. I am spending a lot of my time leaning forward, squinting at the screen, trying to determine if the letter I'm looking at is an H or a K, but it's always fun to read the records and see who these people are. Sometimes, I wish I could know more about them.

But it's making me go cross-eyed, so I'm taking a little break to look at other things. ;D

I finished my long-winded story. I think. 164,000 words. It's hard to stop a story this long. Every ending seems like it's not enough, but I've written the FINIS! and I just need to let it sit for a couple of days and reread it to see if it's not working. Then, I can just post the remaining chapters and be done.

That would've been really difficult for a published author getting paid for writing, let alone a fanfic writer. The fact that you managed to pull it off is noteworthy in my book.

So I've been seeing a lot of ads for a movie called The Promise, and it turns out it's about the Armenian Genocide, which occurred mostly between the years 1915-1917. I have not ever learned about the Armenian Genocide in school. Not once, and that's appalling. The word genocide was coined to describe what happened to the Armenians, but because Turkey refuses to acknowledge that it happened, it's never taught. I guess. But 1.5 million Armenians were estimated to have been massacred by the Ottomans and the Turkish state and that is something that should be talked about. We talk about the Holocaust all the time (and with good reason). We shouldn't let a country pretend it didn't happen when there are photographs and first-hand accounts.

Anyway, I don't normally get on a soap box here, but I was surprised when I realized that I knew next to nothing about it beyond a couple of vague mentions of it when a group of people were intentionally massacred simply because of who they are. That's never okay.

...off my soap box, now.

...oh, and I have no idea if the movie itself is any good. :)

That was never mentioned when I was in school. I've heard of it briefly from my own independent learning, but nothing formal. I've studied the Holocaust of WWII in depth, first at school and independently, and have read countless books, watched countless movies, documentaries, interviews, etc. but I've never seen anything about the Armenian Genocide until now. It truly is shameful that it's largely unknown.

The U.S. has never officially acknowledged it (Obama promised to but didn't), but 45 U.S. states have independently acknowledged it. I'm glad to see that Idaho is one of them (and Utah).

Turkey has actually actively suppressed any mention of it.

I just got a very nice review of one of my stories and it's one of those where I did a lot of research for it and it apparently paid off. It's always a nice feeling when someone thinks I did a good job. :)

Well, it looks as though Photobucket has now bombed my account sharing as well. I'm in the process of deleting all the photos I'd uploaded there. The only reason I made a Photobucket account was to share them here. If I can't do that, then, the Photobucket account is useless to me.

I've deleted all my photos from my Photobucket account with the exception of the screencaps I've made. I've put a lot out there, and if anyone would like to take some before I delete my Photobucket account, you are welcome to them. Here's the link: http://s182.photobucket.com/user/Enthus ... t=3&page=1

I'll leave my account active for a week or so if anyone is interested.

I have a lot of fun making them, I will admit. ;D I've posted screencaps from a number of episodes and featuring different characters. A lot of it was on request. I usually go to Photobucket on Chrome where I have an adblocker, and I just tried to go without one. I can't believe how many ads there are! It's probably for the best that they're forcing me out as it is. I found another site to use to put up banners.

I use Imgur for images. It's easy to use and doesn't require a lot of faff the way Photobucket did. And no ads.

I considered Imgur, but I decided to use a smaller one with very few frills. It's a little clunky, but it works. And no ads. :) It's called IMGbox.

I've been meaning to move from photobucket for several years, as the quality of the service has become noticeably worse (I've had a photobucket for fourteen years, so I have a fair amount of experience in this area!), but this recent ridiculousness is just putting a boot up my butt.

What's most infuriating for me is that due to some stupidity on pb's end (they say they're working on it), the apps won't allow me to download photos, so I have to use the website, which is a pain in the backside on mobile :banghead: I get the impression this was a mistake, not deliberate, but how on earth do you do an update like this and not realise it has completely crippled your mobile apps?!?

I only use the website, but with an ad blocker. In fact, the reason I got an ad blocker in the first place was because there were so many ads on PB that I couldn't get anything to load and most of them looked like malware or spamware.

Well, the photobucket gremlin finally ate my handful of pics that link in pages, so I guess I have to figure out how to find my access to pb (I haven't logged in in so long, I cannot remember my password) so i can see if there are any pics i don't already have on my HD. (I am usually obsessive, so most of the more important ones are probably on my computer, though not necessarily all in one place or in final versions.)

It's not a lot, but it will still be a chore finding where they are broken. Suspect i will be finding them for a while in obscure places. Fortunately, most of my avatars aren't stored there anymore, but I am pretty sure a few sites require you to store EVERYTHING offsite.

PB didn't exactly give people any warning of this. But free means you get what you pay for. I am not sure how many of those images will go up in places where i have to 3rd party host them... I am glad I'm not an illustrator like one friend with literally thousands of images, many linked to both her and other people's stories, as internal illustrations, not just banners. I cannot believe she'll ever catch up.

sigh

I think the issue pb will have is that sure, you get what you pay for, but if photobucket are treating long term customers (who have been bringing in ad revenue for years, even if they've not paid for a subscription) this way, who's gonna shell out four hundred bucks? It's not a good advert for their service.

I was reading posts on the Photobucket FB account and one person made a suggestion that makes this move seem like a business decision, not stupidity. He suggested that Photobucket is trying to get out of this part of their business all together and the only way to do that would be to force everyone to leave the site "voluntarily". How do you do that, especially when people have been hanging on for years? You make the experience so bad and so expensive that they won't be able to stay.

I don't know if that's really the purpose, but if so, it's working.

If it's not, then, this was one of the dumbest business moves I can think of. Even people who have been paying for the service are getting dinged and are leaving.

well, I wrote a long, well thought out post about the whole photobucket mess, but i don't remember it. So... basically, I think free is unsustainable and as long as we are on 'free' services, we're the product to some degree. A pity they don't offer a tiered program b/c people like me with about 3 dozen images, mostly avatars and banners, and no financial gain, cannot pay much for something that is just a hobby...

I see why a company which has an ad based model might want to get rid of all the third party folks who are basically a drain on resources b/c they don't view ads, but 400 bucks is irrational. Even for pros, it will annoy people b/c it breaks trust - lots of sellers ended up with the extortion pic and i assume some did pay. I suspect, all but superusers will probably end up moving images, or just giving up on having images up. i don't *require* a banner, a sig, or an avatar. When faced with extortion, no is the only answer. I hesitate to port to another free site. Any other free is likely to cost me something (info probably or image rights even) or pull something like this eventually. Business is there to make money. It must at least pay the bills, or it won't survive.

I'm only surprised this didn't happen sooner... and that it was so ham-handed.

Anyone know of cheap options for a low volume account??

Teri, are you in the part of Idaho that will have totality during the eclipse? Only 98% where I am, but we're going to a friend's in the totality window. It's too good an opportunity to pass up.

Yes, I am. I'll be going out to my yard to watch the eclipse. I've had pairs of eclipse glasses ready for two years. ;D

But I don't plan on driving anywhere that day. They're estimating anywhere between 50,000 and 500,000 extra people in southeast Idaho during the eclipse.

well, I wrote a long, well thought out post about the whole photobucket mess, but i don't remember it. So... basically, I think free is unsustainable and as long as we are on 'free' services, we're the product to some degree.

I hesitate to prt to another free site.

I'm using DeviantArt for the below banner.

Same around here. My friend who invited us has a 5-acre open field, which is nice. Getting there will be crazy, though. They are expecting so many people. Traffic will be ridiculous. We're going to take the camper and drive over the day before, but it'll still be rough.

There was an eclipse in 1999 here, and I went to visit friends in Cornwall to see it; took the coach, assuming that the roads would be a disaster area, and the entire journey down I was looking at clear, clear roads and wishing I'd driven :banghead: :lol2:

Yum. Cake. I will definitely be having cake tonight. The only bummer is that I have to go and be a responsible adult for a youth church activity this evening. I was hoping that I could beg off and just have my birthday, but they need my help. So we'll be having dinner on the deck. My dad is going to cook some chicken on the grill and then, cake! Yum. ;D

Happy Birthday, luv!

Your birthday is on my parent's wedding anniversary. If they hadn't gotten married back in '59, they couldn't have had me... well, they wouldn't have, anyway.

Anyway, happy birthday, may your coming year be one full of joy and dreams come to fruition.

God Bless,

Blue

It's my Aunt Metta's chocolate cake. It's similar to a Texas sheet cake from what I understand. It's great. Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and nuts. Then, ice cream with it, of course. :)

I also share my birthday with Napoleon. ;D
