Absolutely and somewhat strange this novel took over the world! You couldn't look past it in the bookshops which was a bit annoying when you were looking for a good book. ;D

Just goes to show that bestsellers aren't always bestsellers through quality.

That quote simply says it all.

So many other novels that were qualitatively vastly superior never got the attention this one got. Needless to say, I didn't dash to the nearest bookseller to get myself a copy.
Of course I must add that when I go to a bookstore, it's to buy a non fiction book. I'm happy with my share of fiction I find on the web. :D

Very very belated Happy Birthday, Blue :hug2col: hope it was a good'un.

Thank you so very much!! Not sure who kicked the hornet's nest and re-noticed my birthday, but thank you very much!

Glad you like my 'quotes'. Very much have experienced the second one. The first one... well, that story just makes me wanna hurl. I've only read a few lines...

Oh, and criminal minds just did a 'shades of grey' episode THIS week!!!   and the guy wasn't even living in a trailer!

I think this book is popular for the same reason that lots of low brow fare is... it's entertaining and titillating. And it allows people to explore sides of themselves they would normally be uncomfortable to explore because 'everyone else is doing it'. Human sexuality is an endlessly fascinating topic, but people are terrified to explore it until they get permission... something like this is risque enough to attract attention, but because the guy in the story is 'respectable' (rich) they can hide behind that even if the content isn't healthy, and it's also vapid enough to not be taken too seriously.

Thank you so much for the birthday revival wishes!!!

sadly, quality and popularity are not consistent companions.

Porn is proof positive that quality has nothing to do with popularity.

And for many women, a 'book' will always be more socially acceptable than admitting to friends they watch porn... Add the fact that many women are a lot more verbal than visual anyway... and you have a perfect storm. The porn's right there for them to find... it's called a 'best seller' so they can read it anywhere... No matter that it might actually prove disappointing, disturbing or downright disgusting to some in actual execution... once everyone's doing it, no one's admitting that they're not enthralled... well some of us are.

hehe. I'm sure they got a lot of people that way. Poor thing.

Sorry, they're not getting my money. Hard work earned that. I can settle for the excerpts I've read on the web, and the couple pages I tried to read in the bookstore. I got all I needed to know I never need to read the whole thing.

Drivel? 90% of the fanfic I read is better than that book. No, probably closer to 99%, b/c when I encounter really bad fanfic, I don't read it.

Definitely hang around on the day of the swap and join in the chat. It's always a blast.

There are only a few times a year when the majority of active members are all on at the same time: The WEE Swap, The Hinky Award Ceremony and Christmas morning, when everyone picks up their Secret Santa stories.

That is totally awesome! I used to ride bareback, and that alone has its challenges, but although you do a lot of riding control with your body, this is exceptional... she and her horse have some serious communication!

Sweet!

Thank you!

I'm not a particularly horsey person, but I love seeing when someone is that in tune with any animal

I haven't read FSoG - from the Kindle sample and then the excerpts I saw round the net, it was painfully obvious it wasn't my kind of thing. However, I have been listening to Mark Oshiro read them, and his commentary/reactions? Priceless. Also, even with Mark reading them, I'm continually struck by how dull the writing is. I'm amazed anyone ever got as far as the sex in order to be titillated. It is so boring inside Ana's head. Like Stephenie Meyer before her, E. L. James assumes it's enough to say Ana is clever and well read and interesting, and forgot to actually make her any of those things.

And the sex... oh just don't even... much of it would fit well in the "how not to smut" thread. It's really bad. So unsexy. Worst of all is that dynamic of emotional abuse that is just continually excused because Christian is rich and hot.

Needless to say, I really struggle to fathom why it's so popular. I've read much better smut for free online  ;D

My favourite headcanon, which I think someone mentioned on the youtube bits, spoilered for those who'd rather remain blissfully ignorant.

Spoiler:
Ana goes on about what a big boy Christian is. Someone commented that given her lack of experience, and the fact that delicate little Ana Steele manages to deal with him in several different orifices, the logical conclusion is actually that he's somewhat on the small side  oh, I'm so childish, I know I know, but that made me cackle :evillaugh:

He's definitely on the small side... after all, large men don't need to wave it all around... Also, sadly, large men tend not to be particularly adventurous... they think they're god's gift and that is enough... but that's a whole different story.

Yeah, really never get the attraction of either Twilight or 50. I've read dozens of badfic that were sexier than 50 and I couldn't make it more than a few pages into Twilight. I forced myself to watch most of the first twilight movie (free on someone else's cable) just to see what was so interesting, and I had to force myself to stay awake and then not to stop watching... can't remember if I actually got to the end or not. I certainly don't remember it.

I think these things are hits because some people are sheeple.

Truth.

I read the first book of Twilight because someone who loved it loaned it to me and... yeah, dull. I had a second go at reading it, wanting to give it a fair shot, and had to give up eleven pages in. I wanted to reach into the book and tear Bella's arm off so I would have something to beat her over the head with. Seriously  So I decided I liked my blood pressure where it was, and gave it back.

Most of what I know about the plots of the rest of them are, again, from Mark Oshiro reading them and blogging about them. His tag line was something like "Mark reads Twilight (so you don't have to)", which more or less summed up the exercise. It's more enjoyable to follow him when he's reading something he likes, but there was a certain magnificence in seeing him tear the books to shreds and grow increasingly incandescently angry with how bad they were.

I think one of the worst moments of "OH MY GOD DID YOU JUST" from 50 is when Christian tells Ana something like (not an exact quote, probably), "Don't worry, you expand too" seriously, he is actually the worst at sexy talk and it's hilarious. Oh, and I saw a quote from E. L. James where she said she had other ideas for books but she was worried about publishing more because she had "set the storytelling bar so high" :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

You could not make this shit up, I swear.

The really sad thing about EL James is that people are gonna think all fanfic is that bad. I've read badfic with more ideas than her book and definitely more entertaining.

I think maybe Twilight got the parental seal of approval because of the 'no sex' before marriage business... Of course, the turning one's child into a vampire was fine... (that happened right? I know that was what was supposed to happen... but i lost the bubble on it some place) sigh. If there was ever a bubble. Not really clear on that.

speaking of sheeple... Could Bella be more inane? I've had drinks of warm water more interesting.

Yes, I think you're right about the no sex bit and Twilight, which is kind of ironic since they don't have sex but he stalks her. I mean, great example for the kiddies, no?

Yes, the whole thing I find most disappointing/infuriating about the whole FSOG wreckage is that I know people are going to associate that shite with fanfic, when it's an excellent example of poor literature inspiring even more insipid and poorly written fanfic *siiiiiigh* I hate that if I tell someone I read and write fanfic, that is going to be the image that springs to mind :-/

That does suck. The thing that maybe doesn't suck is that more people who aren't 'into' fanfic will be drawn to at least give it a look... maybe even people who don't like this crap... or people who read that will come lookin for more and get BETTER than they were expecting. One can only hope.

I guess I'll have to say "I write fanfic, but it's NOTHING like FSOG!!" ;D :gah:

Yeah, maybe the 'fanfic' origins of FSOG will draw them in...

Come for the sex, stay for the amazing stories!!! :dancing:

Because all FSOG's success is that it gives women permission to read porn. And it isn't even well written porn. It's sickporn. Anti-feminist, abusive porn. And there are so many women writing positive, affirming relationships with great sex in fanfic. Just wish it hadn't been THIS drivel that had made fanfic famous. :sigh:

Thank you! My trip here was safe and uneventful, just how I like it!! I think after more than 30 years, the US feels more like home, but it's nice to be here in the warm, even though dealing with my mom's various 'issues' is fraught with aggry.

I'm looking forward to seeing my family, though. It's good that they are sane. I'm not sure about mum. :banghead: mostly I want to go :gibbssmack: :gibbssmack: :gibbssmack: but I think she's a lost cause and annoying her more... probably not my best idea! :sigh: :'(

so i :rainy: >:-( :banghead: :gah: :madhop: :P :P :P :P and soldier on! :sigh: :thud: Wish me luck!!

Blue

I'm very grateful to a friend who is letting me house sit even though my mom is mad that I'm not staying the nights to be aggravated 24 hours a day... she's got 30 years+ of aggry stored up and she'll only get to use a tiny amount of it!

But... tropical mornings with birds tweeting and a fresh warm breeze? PRICELESS!

Not sure my mother's demented.. she's always been a trial and age has made it worse. Hard to tell with her what is 'mental troubles' and what is just plain cussedness. It just makes it a trial to deal with which ever way. I've been hanging out with the relatives who I haven't seen in an age. Fortunately, my mum is the black sheep and most of my relatives are kind, fun, nice and SANE.

BTW: I may or may not be able to post consistently to the site. The other day I was blocked from posting as it decided my IP address was spam. No idea why. This is a different IP address. Sadly, the IP address that was blocked is the place I am staying.

Sigh.

Hope to hang with you all. If you need to get in touch with me, know my email isn't working AT ALL. Please leave me PMs here or on TTH forums and I'll check for them.

Peace,

Blue

Hi All,

Blue asked me to post to let you know that you may not hear from her for a bit or until she gets home. The IP address where she's at is being blocked and she is having trouble accessing NFA. Hoping it can be fixed but if not, don't be worried if you don't hear from her as she will be in touch when she gets home. Just FYI.

Blue just let me know that while she can't post, she can read all our posts and she can receive/send PMs and that she will write back as time permits. Just FYI. :)

We've looked into it from the moderation side, but her IP isn't showing up on the list of blocked IPs. So we are kind of at a loss. It's also weird that she can see but not actually post.

I've gotten around blocks elsewhere by using a proxy IP.

Could you post a link, Chelsea? Maybe it can help Blue. We are kind of at a loss.

Not sure if it is possible using a wireless enabled tablet or smartphone; I've only done this from laptops and desktops.

Easy way would be to try visiting proxy server sites like proxy.org and entering the URL you'd like to visit from there. It works by hiding your IP.

Another way is to find an actual proxy IP and plug it into your computer's Internet IP settings. I know on my old Mac it was super easy to figure out. There are many lists of proxy IPs out there. Here is one: http://proxylist.hidemyass.com . It's free, scroll all the way to the bottom to see the list. Not every IP will work, and some will be super slow. You have to test them as you go.

Probably more trouble than it's worth, but it's fun to beat the system. :)

My best guess is that this site is default blocking certain IPs from certain locations to combat spam.

The IP address is on one of the spam lists compiled by spamhaus.org, who is apparently a reputable group for identifying known spammers. My guess is that GoDaddy has implemented automatic blocks based on these lists. I know it isn't on our end.

I have given Blue instructions on how to get the IP removed from the spamhaus list, but it requires her to use a non-freemail email and I think her only email is a gmail account. I know she's working on it.

Heard from Blue.

She followed spamhaus' instructions...to no avail.

Basically, the local ISP has really crappy security, so apparently all the ISP's IP addresses are blocked.

She could try a proxy, but her connection is already really slow. If she does that, it'll be like dial-up days or slower. She may yet do it, if she gets desperate enough.

In the meantime, I've contacted GoDaddy about the issue. I'm leery of having them not auto-block known spammers, but I'm thinking of trying it. If we have a sudden influx of spam traffic, we can always go back. I think. I don't even know if GoDaddy CAN turn it off and back on, but it's worth a shot.
