I think it's how long DiNozzo and Gibbs have been working together.

Maybe related? I made the mistake of reading spoilers this afternoon (which, as we all know, is just SO productive for NCIS) but sources said
Spoiler:
that Tony's taking lead while Gibbs was recovering leads to strain or problems between them.

Sounds like something we handled I. Fanfic LONG ago...

*slow blink*
And they've officially run out of ideas.

I'm thinking something along the lines of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. But then I think... Why is this a "secret society"? Isn't solving cases (including cold cases) part of everybody's job description? Which is -- get this -- the entire crux of the television series?

What if the entire series was just in Ducky's head? And what if he's just sitting in some nursing home somewhere dreaming everything up?

:thinking2:

My mind has been bent.

I'd find this intriguing if we had writers upon whom we could rely for sublty and realism. But we haven't exactly had that luxury. :-/
I don't suppose it's just his bridge group, discussing their more puzzling findings in autopsies ... :sigh:

Ducky's "Secret Society?" he's a Mason.................as for reading our fanfic for ideas, maybe the scriptwriters have for the past 13yes and the "S.S." is in fact NFA.

OK my warped brain just went as warped as corrugated paper in the rain.

Pretty sure he wore shorts in the scenes he was in Mexico with Franks at the start of Season 4, but yes, it's not a fashion statement he usually makes ;D

Uh, Abby is weird. :inquisitive: That whole tree thing was just bizarre. And poor Tony. He is NOT having good luck with nature lately.

Well, when I saw her name in the press release (the character's name), my first thought was, "Hey, there's an author named Judith McKnight." Because, obviously, I see a lot of books, and I see hers quite often. So it made me wonder if she was supposed to be THAT author or what. And with this character being an author, I'm just even more confused, lol. I love that McGee was nerding out, though. ;D

And I love how grumpy Gibbs is being. "What's your name?" "Lyle." "Shut up, Lyle." :lol2: And he mentioned FORNELL! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: My baby.

To answer your question, Colleen, no, we have not seen Fornell yet this season. Unfortunately. I hope he shows up soon. I miss him. :'(

This ep keeps flipping from depressing (the stuff with Abby) to bizarre/hilarious (Judith flirting with Gibbs - "Is that your naughty room? Do you want to know my safe word. It's kielbasa." WTF). It's a weird juxtaposition.

Palmer walking in made me so happy. ;D And his "undercover" role, too. ;D I love him so much.

That was not bad for someone who's never written an NCIS ep before!

I really liked the scene with Tony and Tim doing the bullet trajectory stuff. Very "old school" NCIS.

Just watched this episode. Before tonight, I'd thought the episode, 'No Good Deed' from last season was the worst NCIS episode ever.

Nope. It was stellar, fantastic and very well done in comparison.

This was 100 times worse.

The Tim and Tony scenes were the only redeeming qualities about the entire episode.

The rest was a travesty. I thought about commenting further but frankly, the rest was too embarrassing to even think about, let alone mention further. Moving on...

Well, as always, NCIS provides episodes which delight some and upset others! In a weird way, that proves their consistency... :-/

In general, I'd rather see an eps like this done hamhandedly than an evil-terrorist-hunting grim arc done hamhandedly - the Harper Dearing or P2P hunts come to mind. For me, it's easier to forgive a single ep and smaller issues in a lighter story than the central premise/ theme of several episodes...

not sure why, but this episode doesn't get on my hate meter at all. Harper Dearing and a host of the stupid terrorist crap gets it. The whole Ari business almost made me stop watching... and almost every time Dinozzo senior shows up I want to strangle him.... though that's not so much the episode being bad (though they're not usually great) but that I really do not like the character... I recognize him a little too well. Selfish, entitled, neglectful and dishonest. No child deserves such a parent.

But Tuesday's episode? While it wasn't fabulous and the writing was pedestrian, the payoff at the end with the father and daughter was great and I thought the blonde girl was better than OK. she seems to have developed that thing... where I might remember her name eventually... Um... yeah, personality.

The wanna bes were annoying, but they were SUPPOSED to be annoying.

And hopefully we WON'T be seeing that woman again... the show's writer's are too big on 'big personality, annoying women' for my taste... if there was anything about the episode that annoyed me it was another of those tropes... the pathetic randy old rich cougar with no filter... really don't like that. But OTHER than her, the episode was actually decent.

Shy, I quite agree. when I think about this episode, I will just roll my eyes and chalk it up to an attempt at humor falling flat and fracturing the tailbone (one of the more painful injuries I've ever suffered in my life).

Um well, I thought I'd summed it up pretty well but okay, I guess you want it in details...

Tony was made out to be an incompetent farce of an agent - after all these years, he would've known how to get bullets out of trees and other wooden objects without the obvious and ridiculous splinters (which helped solve the case but I would've thought they'd get a sample of the tree bark just as a matter of procedure anyway.

Tim fan-girl-ing over that author that apparently wrote about a teenage girl even to the point of keeping one of her books in his desk? That was just kind of weird and not in a good way. It was borderline creepy, an adjective I've never associated with Tim before.

And speaking of that author...I think they thought they were making her out to be funny but her coming on to Gibbs the way she did...ugh, the so-called humor was borderline juvenile, desperate, sad and terrifying in turns was campy, stalkerish and ridiculous. I know the safe word part was supposed to be funny but it fell flat. If you're going to use anything BDSM-related for 'humor' the key word is subtle. She was hitting over the head with a 2 x 4.

And speaking of that author, the secret Sherlock group - fighting with NCIS over solving the case, their borderline illegal and outright illegal actions, the campy approach to the case - at the end I half expected the guilty guy to say, "And I would've gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!"

Abby. Being upset because something she did put a guy in jail? Yes, I'd expect her to be a little upset over that. Who wouldn't be? However, science is not perfect despite what she would like to think and after all these years, I'd expect her to know that and be somewhat philosophical about it that new and better methods have evolved. But, Abby being Abby had to be her usual histrionic self and made it all about her instead of dealing with the fact that flawed tests are part of the scientific learning curve. Everyone seemed to understand that, even the guy who was wrongfully convicted, but she should've understood it better than the rest of them. It wasn't cute or adorable, it just made her look neurotic and more annoying than usual. However, the end of the episode was sweet though. The guy could've been bitter toward her and he wasn't. She would've needed that even if she wasn't completely histrionic about it.

When I was younger, I used to like 'campy' humor. I still can sometimes when it's done well. This was embarrassing instead of funny to me.

Sorry you asked, Chels?

Yeah, P, I do see what you mean about the episode. I actually agree about all of it... it just doesn't rise to 'hate' for me. My expectations of writing standards for NCIS aren't that high to begin with and it's been a long, long time since I was really impressed by an episode... or even commonsense, thoughtful police procedure that was good forensically.

I watch in spite of the writing because I like the characters who I think I mostly have to credit the actors with creating... Most long running shows do get imbued with a lot from the actors, even if they aren't the actor's real selves... and I think that NCIS has done well with that one thing.

Casting.

So the writing is pedestrian. Oh well. It does annoy me that the forensics and policing is so far from normal. They've gone the opposite direction from the CSIs, who relied on technology that could do miracles that really weren't practical (especially not in real life)...

Many big cities have rape kits that go untested for DECADES... (a couple of rapists who've progressed to murder might have been stopped had the rape kit been processed, something that makes me livid, but it's just women... anyway, I digress.)

I actually do believe that Abby would be upset about something like that. Don't think she'd melt down, but this show has NO IDEA how to write females, particularly strong ones. They either have no personalities (Bishop) or they're HISTRIONIC or they're like the stupid author-nympho.

Ziva, Rachel Cranston, Jackie Vance are the exceptions... Kate was a bit too 'soft' for a special agent though I really liked her. Frankly, Ziva was so very inconsistent, it was only the actor that made her watchable and I still miss her because of Cote. I liked Diane, but she was much too prone to womanly hysteria. I can't imagine why a man like Gibbs would want her in his life... I always put his wife choices down to grief and trying to replace his wife... a neurotic choice... but Diane had a great deal of potential and we saw it in her final episode because the actress made it work even in the face of a completely unbelievable story line.

And how many of these people have had family members a) involved in cases, sometimes multiple cases b) die or be injured... it's a frickin soap opera! We even had evil twins!!!

The only time I really get upset with the NCIS writers anymore is when they kill off someone I like... such a waste of the one good thing they have going for them... great characters we grow to love... they probably kill them off because they know it's the only drama they're capable of creating.

There are so many of them that Gibbs in particular (and probably some of the other characters too) should barely be able to get up in the morning much less function without deep psychic pain.

Them making stupid mistakes of police procedure that good writers stopped making back in the time of Hill Street Blues and Quincy? Nope! I'm just not shockable anymore.

I've actually been more impressed with the writing this season up until this episode. I'll keep watching it anyway because I love the characters but I'm at the point I'm plotting AU fanfics starting with Kate's death because...

I think a lot of my enjoyment of NCIS is in fanfic... in stories about great characters written better than the show. I look forward to yours.

Personally, I watch more for the interactions between the characters than all the case stuff - the show was always meant to be more about them in the first place and all the "police" stuff kinda came second. It shows sometimes, but it's never really bugged me that much because I just love the characters and want to watch them interacting with each other. And yes, fanfiction is always a great alternative because you can find pretty much exactly what you want - and if you can't, you can write it yourself. *speaks from experience* LOL.

I've really enjoyed every episode this season. Usually there's at least one I'm like meh about by this point, but I don't think I've been disappointed yet. I thought Judith was a bit over the top, but Gibbs' reactions to her were so great that it didn't bother me that much. LOL.

I thought Gibbs was going to crawl out of his skin when she made the kielbasa comment. He looked like he wanted to.

I don't know about "always," Sherry, but early on, after the show caught on for those moments like the head slap, etc, definitely. Someone was smart enough to see the humor worked -- and with it, the character driven approach -- and they relaxed and went with it. ;D

I don't watch a lot of scripted TV other than NCIS and another show or two as a good one comes along -- so just whe I start to get bugged too much by the writing, all I have to do is watch one of the other 80% of scripted shows out there, and the NCIS writing looks like Pulitzer material. :banghead:

Yeah, I just remember DPB saying something about how he wanted to focus more on the kinda day-to-day interactions in a workplace kind of thing (I wish I could find that quote, because it would do so much for my credibility, rather than me saying it & going, ya gotta believe me! :P) & any show that ends up focusing so much on the characters ends up being a favorite in my books. As long as the characters are interesting and not totally expected, if that makes sense. And yes, the humor on NCIS will always be one of my favorite parts about it. I feel like some people wish it was more serious sometimes & I'm like, but then it wouldn't be the same show.

There are times in the past where I've been really disappointed in the writing on NCIS (season 10 in particular for me was a disaster, because they were trying to force so many scenes and it felt obvious that they were trying to go a certain direction and it just didn't work for me - I know some people feel differently, but that's why I said for me), but this season feels like they've kinda gotten back to the old days and I am enjoying it. I hope it continues. ;D

Nope! Not sorry I asked! You've raised some good points!

I didn't think he was made out to be incompetent at all. Although, yes, the splinter stuff was a bit dramatic (but you know... it's Tony aka Drama Queen, which I like about him.... he'll complain for days over a splinter but he won't bat an eye when he's half-dead.) Like I said up above, I loved when they went back out to the crime scene and found the second bullet. It was fun watching Tony and Tim work together like that "out in the field". They're busy bickering while Tony is always trying to get Tim to do the "dirty work." It definitely felt like a nod to (like Sherry said) the "old days." :nice:

I do kind of agree with you about Abby in this episode. Her reaction was a bit much, (but then it was very Abby) plus I think we've visited this before with her? Can't recall when. I did find it ironic that she was bitching about it to Tony, saying basically "you don't understand," when in fact, Tony did make a mistake like that ("Bounce" aka my most favorite-est episode. ) and yeah, he did feel messed up over it.

Here's to hoping "Gibbs digging the splinter out of Tony's finger" is a deleted scene...

Also.... that kind of humor is very NCIS. Sometimes it's "LOL full stop" but sometimes it's "LOL *smack face with palm.*" Corny humor, basically, but chuckle-worthy... usually. And sometimes... sometimes.... it's clever.

;D ;D ;D

Exactly; the mix of humor with the investigation of the week is what made NCIS different than the norm when it got going. Maybe the complaints to have the show be more serious are at least in part not that they sue humor, but that they just get ridiculous with some of it, and it can be TOO much, or ham-handed, or just wrong -- for example, over the years they've used Tony a lot for comic relief, but when it was clear that the audience liked it, they went too far, and ended up with a number of tone-deaf episodes when it comes to his character. When the humor is in tune, it's great; when it's bad, it's becomes am embarrassing, irritating rendering of the character (like MW in that 'fat Elvis' costume... :P ).

They have the same problem with over-Abbying Abby, and making Tim more whiny than they should -- all in the name of human interest? :-/
