Unsure of where you'd like to send your donation? Here's a short list of suggested charitable organizations and projects currently active in Nepal.

1. GlobalGiving Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund

Note: All contributions go to LOCAL organizations already active in disaster response. Options to give online, or by text message (US only).

2. Maiti Nepal -- Give via Friends of Maiti Nepal

Note: Maiti Nepal fights child trafficking in Nepal. They've recently set up an emergency earthquake response fund. I've personally worked with this organization; they do great work.

3. Charity: Water

Note: 100% of contribution goes toward clean water projects in Nepal.

4. Lutheran World Relief

Note: Options to give online, by check, or by phone.

5. Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre

Note: KAT is now helping animal earthquake victims in Kathmandu.

I'm not going to lecture people on who should and who shouldn't receive your funds, but this is a bit of knowledge I believe we all should at least be aware of. I saw this story recently on the PBS Newshour. Not really news, as it's more of a confirmation of what many have already suspected (or directly experienced.)

Check it out:

What happened to Red Cross donations for Haiti?

This is why I have NOT included Red Cross on my (very) short list above. I'm not saying they aren't a worthy organization or that they don't do good work, I just do not trust that they'll put donated funds to good use in Nepal.

Food for thought.
