I have set my admin powers to good use again and updated our Forum, if you have any trouble let me know what I can do to help you or where it goes wrong.

Please be specific in your explanation and make sure that it was not just a one time occurrence before requesting help. Internet is not always as stable as we want it to be and a time out or a glitch can sometimes screw up a website. Also if you receive an error message please copy/paste it for me.

The more specific you are the faster the problem can be solved.

Thank you!

The only thing I've noticed is that updates to the personal photos forum are not showing up under the active topics. There were two responses to my update and I've answered them both, and my thread still isn't showing up as an active topic. I ususally use that link (top left side of the page) to check everything that's been posted or updated since the last time I was on.

The board is being all hinky today. Every 2 or 3 pages I get this error. It lasts for a few minutes and then I can watch an other few pages.

Quote:

I was getting the general error too, but it seems to have settled down now.

Exactly what determines if a post makes it to the active topics list or just stays in the new posting list? And how new is new? In other words, how often do we need to check the site for updates? It used to be that every new posting would also be on the active topics list so I could check that, backtracking to the last post I had read. Now a lot of posts aren't on there, but they may be dropping of the new post list before nap time (the kid's not mine)

I don't know about the general error SQL message; that's over my head and will probably have to wait for Angelique, Zak or Ozgeek to look at.

Thanks for the tip on the active topics, though. I've found that that was a buglet in the recent board upgrade that was done. There is a fix for it, and we'll try to get on it soon. (I'm guessing that it's another thing better left to people who understand this stuff better than I do. :D )

That didn't take long. This showed up on new, but not active. Either there's a lag or there's still a bug. I'm gonna go write now.

I've noticed that when I try to click the little link that says here right under New at the NFA Community, I get this message when I click it.

I think this only showed up after the update.

Hmmm. I don't think we're missing any threads. It's possible that this thread: viewtopic.php?f=341&t=1855 was moved, and so the link is just out-of-date. Is that the thread you were looking for?

No, I was able to find that just fine.

I was thinking of a part of the site that showed how to use some of the features you see when you post a message, only I don't know how.

Like a step by step guide to show how to do the border feature, or highlight feature.

Or did I imagine that?

Hmmm...I don't know.

We can probably create such a thread, if we don't have one. It'd probably go in the Help & How To forum.

I think that 'here' link died when we lost all our global announcement threads. That was before the upgrade. We tried to re-create all the global threads after the great global crash but I don't think we revived the 'new features thread'. From what I remember, we posted to the New Features thread whenever we added a new feature. The same info was then given it's own 'How to' thread for easy access. Basically we haven't done much new since the crash so we haven't needed a new feature thread.

I have changed the 'here' link for the moment to point to the New at NFA forum.

The report they have up there right now is just that it has connections to harmless sites. That's a good sign, actually, because they'd catch the virus if it were still here.

I have noticed that I've been able to edit other people's posts by accident... A couple of times I meant to click 'quote' and clicked 'edit' instead and ended up putting my reply into a post written by someone else... fortunately, I didn't end up deleting anything of anyone's posts (but sometimes, I do delete when I quote, so it's bound to happen, if I keep doing it).

Why is it even possible to edit a post by another user? (I don't know if it's just in my own forum... that was where i noticed it first).

While, I suppose, I'm the admin of my own forum, I think it should be harder to get into the posts of another person (if even it's allowed). As it is currently, it's too easy to delete something unintentionally. (or for someone to delete posts they don't agree with. It seems that unless a post is truly offensive, it should require a moderator or admin of the board to delete it...)

Is there a setting I can change in my own board?

In your author board, you are a moderator. That means that you have a lot of power to change things there. You can move threads around yourself and you can start threads, etc. You can't delete threads because we've had some issues with that in the past, but as long as you can't do those things in other boards, you have the powers we've given you.

If you don't want those powers in your author board, we can, of course, remove them, but what we do is give every author standard moderator status within their own author board and nowhere else on the site. So far, there have been no problems (with the exception of the aforementioned deleting of threads).

I think what I'll need to do is to take away my power to do that, if I can just take that power away (b/c there might be other powers that go with that which I don't want to give up... will have to check) After all, I can always turn it back on if there's an emergency. Will try to figure it out... I want for example to put the unrelated threads at the bottom of the list... can I do that? Gotta find instructions... this board is vast and at times a bit confusing... lovely, but confusing.

thanks

You can't remove your own powers. The site moderators need to do that, but we can do that if you'd like, but you should list what you don't want to be able to do because if you're not a moderator on your board, you can't start threads or organize your board, for example.

This board does take some getting used to. There are a lot of how-to threads that you should read through to help. If you can't figure something out, just ask.

Thanks. Nope, not giving up the ability to start my own threads or organize things... guess I'll just have to pay attention to the 'edit' thing and make sure only to click it on my own posts. Partly, it's because stuff is organized differently than on tth forums and I'm used to that... but there's a lot I can do here I can't do there and I'm not giving that up!

Do hope you guys like me, because you're stuck with me! :dancing: :heartsthree:

I understand that. This is the only fanfiction site I've used (besides ff.net). So I can easily see that moving to another setup would be difficult.

One thing I will mention, though, is that, if you want to keep some threads at the top of your author board, you can make them "Sticky". Below the text box, you have the option of posting your thread as a Sticky, i.e. as a sticky note. If you choose that option, it will remain at the top of your board, no matter what. If you have multiple Sticky threads, they will fluctuate depending on which has been posted in first, but they will still stay at the top of your board.

I primarily use my iPhone to browse the forum. Recently, I've been having to sign in each time I visit, regardless of whether or not I've checked the "remember me" option. Anybody else having this issue? I realize that it might be my phone, which is over two years old and showing it.

I had that problem for awhile on my old phone, but it seems to be working okay on my new one. I don't know if there's any rhyme or reason to it, though I do have my phone connected to my home WiFi, so I think it imported my Chrome settings from my laptop to my phone, because there are times when I'm looking for something & I'll get a site I've never looked at on my phone, but have used on my laptop. So I think that's why it logs me on automatically. I don't know how to fix it otherwise. It was annoying, but it wasn't like it was that hard to remember my password or anything.

I too have to sign in when I tick the remember me button, but.............when you delete history on my phone all passwords go too.......and also if I back space too often brings me back to the sign in page. That's my phone. and if on 'puter delete history and cookies then have to resign.

I did not delete the cache or cookies on this phone before the problem occurred. It's okay, not a huge issue or anything, but just an inconvenience to type in username and password every time, especially because I'm tapping a touchscreen with only one finger.

Would updating the browser or the phone software help?

I'm not signing in from a phone. I think there's a glitch in the matrix. (I think the issue is on the board side) Multiple people using multiple different devices (phones, computers, tablets) and software (browsers) and having the same problem means the problem isn't likely with the end users, but with the board.

We're also on different platforms. mac. pc. android.

Odd. I haven't had it happen. I'll check into it and see if there is a known issue.

According to that, it may be a problem with the cookie settings. They seemed okay, but I reset them anyway. Hopefully I didn't break anything.

I had to log in again for the first time in ages, but if you just reset the cookies, then, that may be why.

Yes, that's because I reset the cookies. Everyone will have to log in once. Hopefully, after that, it won't happen again.

Well, I went out and back in again and I didn't have to log in again. Seems like it's fine...but then, it was fine for me before, too. :)

That's because Barbara reset the site cookies (or something like that). Everyone will have to re-log in again. After that, it should be OK. If not, please let us know.

This discussion is making me hungry. ;D

Are you using Safari from your iPhone by any chance?

i had to sign in this morning even though I didn't have a browser crash. About half the time that firefox crashes, I have to re-sign in, but never just for going to sleep for a few hours. I was wondering what was up when I had to sign in.
