This may have been asked before, but is someone familiar with the Block User feature at the site? Is it like the Mute feature on Twitter where the person you muted don't know they've been muted? Will it also prevent them from PM-ing and leaving reviews? Any help would be appreciated. :)

In my experience - it will block someone from reviewing your stories or from PMing you. I don't believe you get notified; I once left a review with a grammatical thing, the person in question PM'd me to say thanks and then blocked me, and I only found out when I went to reply to the PM. (Is it me, or is it really peculiar to thank someone then block them?!)

I believe the ability to PM can be switched off independently of blocking a person, but I don't think the same is true of reviews. If you block someone and they try to PM you, they won't have any sure way of knowing if you have blocked them or if your PM function is turned off. However, I think if they leave a review, then it will become apparent that you have blocked them.

All of this comes with the disclaimer of "in my experience..." but hope it helps.

I've had a story I posted disappear, twice. I have no idea why, since as far as I know it didn't break any rules. I give up.

ETA: Make that three times. WTF?

That's weird. Maybe they're having one of their strange glitches. They never say anything when they do. You could try reporting it. They won't acknowledge your message, but they might do something about it.

I may try re-uploading it and re-posting it in a few days. It's weird that it happened three times, though. I did report it but I haven't received a response.

I last updated three days ago, and it was working fine then. I haven't posted anything otherwise.

I've managed a grand total of one story there in... like, six months?? For the most part I've given up.

Not sure if this is your problem, but after publishing a new story, it takes some time before it shows up on the main listing.

Sluggish this weekend? New reviews arriving in email, but not posted to site; new chapters uploaded and, apparently, email notices going out, but onsite update is still not up, when they are usually almost immediately online. :P

I had the review issue. I got the email for it but it wasn't there when I went to reply.

Same review issue still happening - first was for an old chap. I posted a new chap last night & got around 7 reviews overnight, but the site says none of those has been posted. I sent support an email, but we all know how effective that's likely to be ... :P

At least I'm hoping that enough people bug them that they'll look into it.

I think they usually do look into it pretty quickly, but they almost never acknowledge that anything happened. You'd think it'd be easy to post something, but they never do. Customer Service is not their forte over there. I got a few email reviews yesterday, but I haven't tried to reply to them yet.

That seems to happen every so often over there. I've had it happen a few times in the past but not this time around. It's usually sorted out within 48 hours. It's a pain in the meantime though.

I would not have known but for a kind reviewer, who apparently checked and saw that the review was not posted. She re-created it and sent it to me in a p.m., and then tried to post a review again, but the system told her she had already reviewed for that chapter.

And Teri, you are certainly correct that the people working at FFN rarely acknowledge their issues – a glance at the dates on the postings they have on the homepage make it clear that they pick and choose what they report. The last notice of any problem was last May, and before that, I think it was February. I have sent several notices of things over the years and never have had a reply to the email.

Oh well, it's free.

Color me absolutely shocked. I sent a message to ff.net about the reviews not showing up and, lo and behold, they responded to me just now, telling me that the bug had been fixed! An actual response! (And yes, the bug had been fixed when I checked the reviews that weren't working before.)

I have never, not once in all my time on ff.net, received a response to a reported issue. Not once. Until now. :)

I bet you were very polite, it made them smile and that's why they responded.

Well, I didn't berate them or anything. I just told them the issue and copied and pasted the error message I received. :)

I bet they do get a lot of e-mails berating them. It always amazes me how rude people can be about things.

I came here to say precisely the same thing! I sent a note Sunday, then another yesterday -- and got the reply you did to both!

Way to go, FFN! ;D

I've all but given up on FFN. It's just become a pain to post there. Haven't actually searched for a story there in months.

If I try and amend (or even look at) story details on FFN, it tells me I might be a spammer and to try again later :banghead: Anyone else having this issue? If they're trying to make me entirely abandon the site, they're going about it the right way...

No, I was so tired and out of it, thought I'd wait and see if it resolved by itself. It seems to be working okay this morning, I guess time will tell if it stays that way!

If I wasn't already using AO3 as my main archive, I'd be jumping ship. As it is, I've posted a grand total of seven stories there this year, where I've posted forty on AO3

I'm not in the mood to move all my stories anywhere. So I'll stick with it. I expect glitches in a site that is run for free. The interface is generally fine and I have a bit of a following there. :)

FFN entirely stopped working for me for months and months - I have posted almost twice as many stories in the last six months on AO3 as I have in the last eighteen months on FFN - so I really didn't have a lot of choice. It wasn't just glitchy, it was months at a time when it wouldn't allow me to post anything except (sometimes) additions to preexisting stories, which was rather limiting. There are gaps of two or three months when I didn't post anything, but when it was at its most glitchy, I couldn't actually post a new story (rather than just add chapters to an old one) from the end of August last year to the beginning of June this year.

I'd already started to crosspost to AO3 anyway, so given the choice between not being able to post a story to FFN versus copying the stories that weren't posted on AO3 (which thankfully was merely a case of cut and pasting) so my archive over there was complete, it wasn't really a choice. (I actually haven't tried to post from the FFN website in quite a while, these days I upload the files to the website but post from the app, because the website so rarely works for me.)

AO3 is so much better in terms of tagging and flexibility and sheer reliability (they sometimes have downtime, but it's generally more scheduled and they let you know in advance), mostly these days I only post stuff on FFN if I'm exhausted and have no energy to be more productive and so I copy the stories and the summaries, etc, from AO3. Always assuming, of course, that FFN is actually working :confusion-shrug: When a site stops working properly for nine months... it's long since stopped being my primary archive.

But if it gets to the point where I can't even curate the stuff that's already posted? Then we will definitely get into the territory of none of my new stories will go there/I will consider upping sticks altogether, because that's downright absurd. Like I say, if they're looking to make me say screw it and desert FFN, that's the way to do it. If people really wanna read my stuff, I'm not hard to find elsewhere, and people have happily followed me to AO3.

When ff.net stopped allowing me to post links of any sort (even email addresses) either in private messages or on my profile and actually converted all my (handful of) links to ff.net's url, I virtually stopped using the site and decided never to post my stories there.

Now, other than a handful of stories I've followed for a long time, I seldom go there unless i follow someone's paean to a fabulous story 'i must read' that cannot be found elsewhere. Even then, I often don't bother.

For a while, there was an addon that allowed me to download or read 'whole story' but when it was blocked, I pretty much gave up. I've found that site to be such a pita to use for so long, I pretty much boycott it.

And of course, there's the endless trolling my friends complain about in the form of inane or even abusive reviews/pms...

I was deeply grateful when AO3 became fully functional. That it covers all fandoms, means it neatly replaces the pit for me (ff.net) and without the pissy interface or idiot Voles. Once i found AO3 had a choice of darker skins (I really hate reading on a white background b/c i find it very tiring), I actually started adding my stories to that site. So I read almost entirely on TtH, AO3, Elysian Fields and here (and once in a while, BSV, though it appears to be dying). If you guys weren't so cool, the white background would be a bigger turn off... But the interface here is functional and the natives are lovely, so I'm here.

Blue

Down with the Pit of Voles!!

FF.net has an app?
I always use the mobile site for reading but I guess I have to look an AO3 now too if so many writers have problems with ff.net.
And I find the posting a new story via the document manager always a bit complicated but I do not publish that often so it worked out for me.

Yes, ffn has an app - it's honestly not great, kind of clunky and it loses formatting when you add documents, and it doesn't actually lay things out how they are on the website... but it has an app, and I think it has the facility to download stuff to read offline. It's better than the mobile site for posting stories, so there's that ;)

AO3 works really well on mobile, so while I'd love an app, it's not the end of the world. The only things it's missing besides that are probably the private messaging system and an easier way to exclude stuff from search results, but pretty much everything is workable. There are better single-fandom archives in terms of story variety (because some people only post in specific archives), but for overall experience, AO3 is the best I've used by far in terms of ease of use and flexibility. Posting images or urls, wide, wide language support, flexible tagging, any fandom or pairing... actual support for problems... it took me a while to fully get the hang of it, but now I have, I'm a fan.

Blue, I'm not sure whether you realise or not, from your post, but in case you didn't, if you find yourself with a story you can only read on FFN for whatever reason, it does have the facility to flip the screen to white on black. Somewhere at the top of the story page, little half white, half black circle. I rarely go on FFN any more, like you, but when I do, that little button gets utilised ;) I imagine you've probably seen it, but just in case.

Thanks for the reminder. I have used it, and though it is slightly better than nothing, I find the white text on solid black has issues also. I like a colored background best of all... more restful than pure white, and easier to read and less intense than solid black. Mostly, I just try to avoid ff.net

I hear ya  the occasional older story that's not available elsewhere is the usual reason I'm ever there these days.
