I'm reading Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami. It's old (1985...well, the English translation was published in 1991), but I'm only just now reading it. It's been recommended to me many times. It's pretty fabulous, if you've never read it.

Started James Oswald's 3rd book "Hangman's Song", his books are slight demonic but set in Edinburgh

The body of a man is founding hanging in an empty house. To the Edinburgh police force this appears to be a simple suicide case.
Days later another body is found.
The body is hanging from an identical rope and the noose has been tied using the same knot.
Then a third body is found.
As McLean digs deeper he descends into a world where the lines of reality are blurred and that the most irrational answers become the only explanations.

Being World Book Day in UK and Ireland saw this;-

The nation’s favourite opening lines

1. All children, except one, grow up.' - Peter Pan by JM Barry
2. 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.' - A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
3. 'It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.' – 1984 by George Orwell
4. 'When Mr Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton.' - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkein
5. Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, 'and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice 'without pictures or conversation?'' - Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
6. 'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of good fortune must be in want of a wife.' - Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
7. 'Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.' - Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling
8. 'Here is Edward Bear, coming down the stairs now, bump bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin.' - Winnie-The-Pooh by AA Milne
9. 'My father got the dog drunk on cherry brandy at the party last night.' - The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾ by Sue Townsend
10. 'The sun did not shine, it was too wet to play, so we sat in the house all that cold, cold wet day.' - The Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss

I saw this Scout horror novel A novel about a scout camping weekend that takes a scary twist has won the first James Herbert award for horror writing, and I so thought of Tim and the scouts.

The book was written by Davidson under the pseudonym of Nick Cutter. It tells the story of scoutmaster Tim Riggs and his troop of boy scouts who encounter an "emaciated stranger" on a camping trip in the Canadian wilderness.

I have that book, but I haven't read it yet.

The only stuff I've been reading lately is just a lot of fanfiction. :P

Would have been fabulous if not for the very end. Ugh. So unsatisfying. Too true to life, I suppose.

While I agree, I like an unsatisfactory ending now and then. It reminds me of reality

:wavingyellow: I a reading mode, but as you know going to do the Futurelearn course "Identifying the Dead: Forensic Science and Human Identification"
Uncover a grave, examine remains and reveal the victim’s identity in this free online course, linked to a new Val McDermid story.

And, Forensic Psychology: Witness Investigation
Discover how psychology can help obtain evidence from eyewitnesses in police investigations and prevent miscarriages of justice.

Well thought if going to do a course by Val McDermid better get inside her head, so just read "Fever of the Bone" and then got "The Retribution" yes the first different, and also she did create TV's "Wire in the Blood".

OMG. Yes. The ending of Gone Girl. I loved it and hated it but mostly found it was perfect.

Recently finished reading a novel that's very "Gone Girl" esque. It's called "The Girl on the Train." I recommend it. Quick read that keeps you guessing. Although you've probably already read it because it's been pretty "big."

That's how I felt about the ending of Diary by Chuck Palahniuk. I hated the ending, but it was the right ending for the book, so I was okay with that. I like when writers recognize the right ending as opposed to the happy ending. Sometimes endings aren't happy.

Just finished Armada by Ernest Cline. It's his second book. I knew I would love it after how much I freaked out over Ready Player One last summer. Armada is just as fun. Kind of Ender's Game meets The Last Starfighter with a little bit of Ready Player One sprinkled in just for giggles. Pretty perfect, really.

I was so excited when Spielberg agreed to direct the Ready Player One movie. That's gonna be such a huge blockbuster. I cannot freaking wait.

Just purchased Harper Lee's "Go Set A Watchman" from the local bookseller! Can't wait to read and add my own opinion to the fracas going on over it.

I hope to be getting back to reading again next week, because I bought a bigger purse so I can actually fit a book in it, lol. Probably will go back to reading the Best American Short Stories book I was reading (I think it's the one from 2014, actually). And there are a handful of books I priced this week that I hope are still there next week. A couple of Katherine Dunn books (she wrote Geek Love, which I loved) and a collected stories of William Faulkner, which I don't think I have, but I may have to take a look. I have the Faulkner Reader, which has a bunch of shorter stuff in it, but I don't know if it's the same thing. Very exciting.

I need a purse because I always carry too much crap with me. :lol2: My wallet, cell phone, keys, gum, mp3 player, chargers for my cell phone & mp3 player, Excedrin Migraine and Aleve... I think that's everything in my purse right now, and it's not very big, so that stuff doesn't fit in there very well, lol.

Anyway. I was going to buy a Charles Baxter book at work the beginning of this week, too, but somebody else bought it before I could. :( There's a Lorrie Moore book I don't have that I want to pick up, though. Forgot about that.

I have to recommend Simply Sarah by Hilary Manton Lodge. I've read it several times and I absolutely adore it. It's a former Amish girl who's trying to adjust to life in the outside world as a fashion student.

And I can't remember if I've recommended it here, but Andreea Raducan's memoir, "The Other Side of the Medal." Andreea was seventeen years old when she won the Olympic All-Around in Gymnastics at the 2000 Olympics, only to lose her medal because of testing positive for a forbidden cold pill. It was a tremendously sad situation and even the IOC agrees she herself was not at fault. She also talks about her life in Romania and it's just a really interesting book. I've read it at least ten times since I got it in April 2014.

:sigh: oh dear, bought "The Lewis Man " by Peter May, thought it would be a good murder mystery, but one of the characters has dementia and tells his part of the story from a "locked head" I mentioned on the TP forum and they said they wouldn't like to read. Again can't put it down as it has me in a morbid interest on how the writer is going to write someone with dementia.

I gathered some books I'm going to be taking on vacation with me to read since I don't plan on using the internet much (if at all):

Isaac Asimov Black Widowers books - 2 or 3 - I always forget how many I actually have. Amazing stories.

Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy. Yeah, I know these are old but I'd never heard of the author and an old friend highly recommended her so I'm giving her a shot.

I'm also taking Isaac Asimov's Nemesis in case Robin Hobb doesn't interest me after all and re-reading the Black Widowers' tales do nothing for me.

I'll be taking some new fiction books with me tomorrow, but right now, I'm reading A History of Medieval Europe.

Well I finished the book and I had a lump in my throat, the book was very well written, and from a character who's mind was supposed to be gone, it showed that he still had it all locked in the brain, he remembered just couldn't tell.

But up at charity shop and bout Peter May's 1st book in the trilogy form £1.30 so well chuffed. The Blackhouses.

I've been reading self-improvement books lately - I've just finished The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy (darrenhardy.com) - the author is very good at being a hard-ass; his words are very eye-opening, and really provoke change.

I'm also reading Your Sacred Self by Dr. Wayne Dyer, who just passed away this past Saturday (article: http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2015/08/30/wayne-dyer-obituary/71435806/). So far I like what I'm reading, and I look forward to reading the rest of it.

:'( I've slowed right down on the last few DW, because there will be no more after TSC.

I'm currently rereading Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind. Loved it in my teens, and then books 1-3 and the prequel all came up on various Kindle daily deals so I'm having a nostalgic reread.

NOTE: All three books in the trilogy are now available.

Book 1: The Atlantis Gene -- amazon.com/dp/B00C2WDD5I
Book 2: The Atlantis Plague -- amazon.com/dp/B00GR5JZHQ
Book 3: The Atlantis World -- amazon.com/dp/B00JVUQ2H0

The Atlantis World is the final book in A.G. Riddle's bestselling Origin Mystery trilogy. This adventure across space and time explores the history of the Atlantean homeworld and culture, a topic readers have asked about since the release of the first novel in the series, The Atlantis Gene. The trilogy is currently in development at CBS Films to be a major motion picture.

I see those come in at work every now and then.

I'm reading Horns by Joe Hill. It's good, but I can't help but roll my eyes over how much it's two guys fighting over a gorl, essentially.

I liked Horns. It was different ;D

I'm reading Side Jobs by Jim Butcher, a collection of short stories in the Dresden 'verse that didn't make it into the books. It's keeping me occupied until the next book does come out.

Whoops, that was supposed to say girl, not gorl. :P It is good, but I just have a hard time sympathizing with the main character because of the second section that talks about when they were teenagers. It's like, ooh you were a rich white kid, boo hoo. LOL But finding out the characters backgrounds & their relationships with each other has been very interesting.

Just starting this: Alan Cumming, 'Not my father's son' .

It's a memoir. His voice is interesting. A bit self centered, but he's an actor, so there's that. Still, it seems to have promise.

Interested in hearing if anyone else has read or is reading it.

Hi, Alan Cumming, a fine Scottish actor, but yes I have heard of the book but I know he was on a British TV programme "Who Do You Think You Are?" where he talked of his early life.

First saw him in a TV programme The High Life
