Welcome-Back Picnic
by channelD

written for: Emy, as a Haiti auction set of five drabbles.
rating: FR13
characters: at Emy’s request: Ziva, Tony, Tim, Gibbs and Jimmy
prompt: Emy requested something set post-Truth or Consequences
spoiler warning: Episode 7.01, Truth or Consequences

- - - - -

Ziva:

I barely have a place to live in. As suddenly as I left America, I am back, and paying too much money to stay at a motel. At the moment I only have three changes of clothes and no time to go shopping. I have no income yet—unless NCIS hires me. Summer will not last and I will need clothes for winter. New coats, new boots, new everything.

The last thing I should be thinking of is going on a picnic, just two weeks back in DC—but somehow, it feels so good. Thank you, McGee, for this.

- - - - -

Tim:

I once resented not being sent into the field as much as Tony and Kate..or, now, Tony and Ziva. And then came Somalia.

Mind you, I would do what we did all over again, because it got us Ziva. But now I see field work as an unromantic means toward an end. Every day now, I am grateful for not just living, but for being able to enjoy pleasures. I hope Ziva likes this picnic I organized. We need simple pleasures.

- - - - -

Tony:

‘Ziva’ does not begin with a ‘Zee’, it begins with an ‘Ungrateful’.

I said I’d bring all the food for the picnic, and I did. Fried chicken, potato salad, fruit salad, carrots, celery, angel food cake, beer and water. But everything is wrong in her eyes. Too much of this. Not enough of that. Why so many calories? Why didn’t I consult with her before I went shopping? Yeah, there’s more to her quarrel with me than food.

But, damn. I’d shop for anything if only we could go back to the way things were.

- - - - -

Jimmy:

I am so out of my league in this picnic group. I’ve never even been to Canada; much less Somalia. How could I begin to know what Ziva went through? Or even Tony or McGee or Gibbs? Those guys are all heroes. I’ll bet they didn’t even break a sweat during all of that! Can you imagine what a movie that’d be?!

I wish Abby and Doctor Mallard could be here today. I really do feel like the fifth wheel.

But that’s okay; this is for Ziva. And the nice thing is…everyone’s thrilled to have her back!

- - - - -

Gibbs:

Things change. Events bring out the best—and worst—in people. I had some misgivings about her when we left her in Israel. With her back in DC, I have doubts the size of whales.

DiNozzo and McGee were spectacular in Somalia. I’m proud of them. So is Vance, and everyone else.

But a picnic? It’s just like McGee, who’s far too trusting, to organize a picnic for her. Guess the team deserves it. Maybe it’ll do them some good.

But I’ll keep my eye on Ziva. Can she really become a successful agent?

Do I trust her?

-END-

Oh how nice! I'm sure Emy's gonna love these.

I think my favorites are Ziva, Tim, and Tony. Gibbs makes me a little sad, but it makes sense with when this is set in the timeline.

And Jimmy...oh Jimmy. Poor oblivious, awkward Jimmy, how I love you. You really seem to have Jimmy's character nailed down.

Well done! :heartsthree:

Oh wow, thank you so much. I'm not exactly sure if it was your intention to make me cry, but you did. I particularly loved Tony's little drabble. But I did love all of it; it's such a lovely idea what would do well expanded into something bigger. Loved the use of first person which some something that seen that often in fic. But it was gorgeous and I thought you captured the voices really well. :smitten:

Thank you!!

Thanks, Zainub! I think it would have taken a lot to make Gibbs happy at this point. :)

Glad you liked it, Emy! No, I wasn't trying to make you cry, although I don't mind wringing a bit of sentiment from the readers. :D

Very nice! To be honest, when you said related drabbles, I wondered how you going to relate five sets of 100 words. I don't know if I could do that myself. ;D This is lovely and, yes, wrings a bit of sentiment...although I didn't cry. :)

Gibbs is right. Only McGee would think of something like this. ...and Jimmy would probably feel like the odd man out, although I'll bet he wouldn't so much if Gibbs weren't there. With Gibbs there, it's more about the group as a team. If it had just been the rest of them it would be more about coworkers.

I liked this! I hate that Abby and Ducky weren't there...makes me wonder who hogtied and gagged Abby and then left her behind. :) Great job with all the voices. Tony's was my favorite.

Teri: If it had been a set of seven drabbles, Abby and Ducky would have been there. As it was, these five were the characters that Emy requested. :) Yes, Tim would think of this as a comforting thing (although Abby might feel that way, too). Everyone else would probably just blunder along, which kind of makes me wonder now what Tim had to do to convince everyone that this was a good idea. Good point about Gibbs removing it from being "just coworkers". And actually, I find drabbles much easier to write than longer forms, as long as there's an idea to be expressed.

Barbara: I was going to invent a reason for Abby and Ducky not being there, but then decided to leave it open. I liked Tony's bit the most, as well.

  What a great snapshot of everyone's thoughts right after Truth or Consequences! I don't think I can pick a favorite, they were all so spot on.

Thanks, Colleen! I think someone else here did that recently; I know it's not original to me. I do like related stories...and I have two coming up for Barbara.

Okay, when I said you write everything brilliantly, I’d pretty much forgotten drabbles...well, you do them brilliantly too! I loved all of these and would be loathe to choose a favourite because they work so well together as a group – wonderful!

Pam, love it! I think that the thing I like most about this is that it's not just happy We're-all-going-to-a-picnic-and-everything-is-back-to-normal, there's the uncertainty and an almost wishful-of-the-past feeling (Mostly in Tony's). (It made sense in my head, but now that I read it over... :( ) I especially love Jimmy's one. Aw, Jimmy. Feeling awkward like he doesn't belong, I've been there :hug2col: . And Tim planning a picnic :smitten: . *Sigh* ;D

Very nice, Pam.

"I have been reliably informed that I don't have one."
"But we both know that's not quite true."

Each one was spot on in character.

I enjoyed this.

Oh sweet darling McGee :). And Tony wanting it to be as it was. Jimmy feeling awkward. I liked all of it. Especially it's closing which leads up to an exchange we have already seen.

Well done Pam!

Wow, a lot's happened since that episode, hasn't it? But you've reminded me of the mood of the team during that time. Nicely done, Pam!

Thanks, Gillian! What you said makes perfect sense. Yes, I don't write many happy fics. ;D Dramas and mental anguish make me happy, so that's mostly what I write. Nearly every action in life has the bitter along with the sweet, the sense of loss along with the sense of accomplishment. I think that's what I was trying to show here.

And thank you, Heather! From one who "gets" characters as well as you do, I feel that's high praise. :)

I think Truth or Consequences is one of the best episodes of the entire series. And as you say, Shellie, a lot has happened since then...but it's hard not to come back to it as the basis for the characterization of this season. I think at this point, the Tony & Ziva tensions are still there (though not as pronounced), and Tim still feels just happy that Ziva's back.

Oh, these were fantastic. I'll agree with everyone else that Tony's was just awesome (the first two lines were like, "Ouch," but it made so much sense coming from him). And it's just like McGee to organize something like this. What a sweetheart. :smitten: Lovely work. :)

Thanks, Sherry! One thing I find interesting about Tony as a character is that what he says is not necessarily what he is feeling. When we then get a chance to see what he really thinks, it can be really nice.
